Letter from our Growth Team

Hello! My name is Mary Leufstedt and I am currently serving as the President of the Gamma Psi Chapter of Alpha Sigma Tau here at Fitchburg State University!

I am a junior Communications Media major with a concentration in Graphic Design and I was initiated with the Alpha Gamma class in the Spring of 2018. Within our chapter, I have previously held the positions of Secretary, Historian, Social Chair, Greek Week Rep, Director of Structured Recruitment, Vice President of Finance, and currently President. Alpha Sigma Tau has not only given these invaluable leadership skills which have taught me skills and lessons that I will carry on with me indefinitely for future endeavors, but has also built a confidence within myself that I never knew I’ve possessed, given me a family here at school, and has provided me with some of the most meaningful friendships and experiences of my life. Commonly people discuss the “defining moment” in their lives, and I am proud to say that becoming a sister of Alpha Sigma Tau is mine.

As a first year student entering college I never pictured myself to be someone who’d join a sorority. Having always been shy, awkward, and “different”, I believed that I would never fit in nor let alone be accepted into a sorority. My first semester of school I found myself being actively involved with dance, theatre, and my on campus job, but at the end of the day, I didn’t feel as if I found that close knit group of friends you hope to get out of your college years. I spent many days yearning and seeking that, and during my second semester here at school I found just that. I took a leap and attended Meet The Sisters and when I spoke to the incredible women of Alpha Sigma Tau, I knew that those were my people. After going through recruitment, I was absolutely thrilled to accept my bid and the rest has been history.

Some of my favorite memories from this whole experience thus far have been receiving my Big sister (who is now one of my closest friends and even my roommate), attending my first formal, proudly raising money for our amazing philanthropies at our big fundraising events such as Swing-A-Thon and Run in Her Shoes, becoming a Big myself, serving as the director of structured recruitment, being elected as our president, and so many more big and small moments in between.

I can safely say that Alpha Sigma Tau has taught me to be a stronger person, a better friend, a better student, a better member of our community, and to be Active, Self Reliant, and Trustworthy. In addition, I have found a family in Greek Life as a collective and the experiences I have had with Greek Life as a whole are invaluable as well. I am forever grateful to have this second family.

I truly hope that this recruitment season you’ll take a leap, just as I did, and give Fraternity/Sorority Life here on campus a chance. It has changed my life for the better in more ways that I could name and I would love to see you experience this as well. If anyone has any questions, I’d be more than happy to answer them. Please feel free to contact me at mleufste@student.fitchburgstate.edu. Thank you all!

Tau Love and Mine,
Mary Leufstedt
